Community Centers
and Schools
There are excellent community centers & schools that offer continuing studies classes & programs in arts & crafts, the performing arts, literature, etc. Some offer performing arts & literary series to the public while others have gallery exhibits.
The ArtsCenter (Carrboro - in the Triangle) - The ArtsCenter offers continuing studies classes in art, dance, music, writing, and cooking; concerts and theatre productions; children's and family programs; and gallery exhibitions. It is over 25 years old, and serves more than 50,000 people annually.
Artspace (Raleigh) - Artspace, started in 1986, provides the community with a unique environment where artists, working in studios open to the public, invite the community to become part of the creative process. It has a visual art center where children and adults can participate in educational programs; a venue for art exhibits; and a gift shop. The site also has an artists' directory.
The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design (CCCD) - (Hendersonville) As part of the UNC Asheville Kellogg Center, the CCCD is a regional center of the University of North Carolina. It supports research in craft and design; convenes national meetings, regional workshops and con-ferences; has numerous exhibitions; and features public art on the Rudnick Nature Trail. The Center works with national and regional artists, craft organizations, schools, and the local community.
Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art (Greensboro) - Green Hill is a visual arts center presenting exhibitions and educational programs on contemporary N.C. art. It provides educational oppor-tunities and outreach programs for children and adults. It hosts symposia, panel discussions, lectures and tours, and has a gallery. It has served as a com-munity and statewide resource for over 30 years.
John C. Campbell Folk School (Brasstown) - The Folk School, which opened in 1925, is in the westernmost part of the state. It provides experi-ences in non-competitive learning and community life that are joyful and enlivening. It offers weeklong and weekend classes for adults in crafts, art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, nature studies, photo-graphy, and writing.
McColl Center for Visual Arts (Charlotte) - The McColl Center is a contemporary art center. It has artist-in-residence and affiliate artist programs, providing artists with a state-of-the-art facility, collaboration with other artists and the community, and associations with worldwide arts organizations. It provides opportunities for the public to learn and explore contemporary art via exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and community outreach projects.
Penland School of Crafts (Penland) This is a national center for craft education located in in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It offers 1, 2, and 8 week workshops in books & paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking, textiles, and wood. The school also sponsors artists' residencies, educational outreach programs, and a craft gallery.
Pocosin Arts (Columbia) - As Eastern North Carolina's premier hand-craft education center, Pocosin Arts showcases the rich cultural heritage found in eastern North Carolina. Classes, workshops & residencies are held in pottery, weaving, spinning, quilting, embellishing, carving, soap making, glass slumping and fusing, blacksmithing, pit firing, story telling, dancing and roots music.
Sawtooth School for Visual Art (Winston-Salem) - The school serves as the premier commu-nity visual arts school in the Piedmont Triad. It provides art education in ceramics, fibers, painting and drawing, metals, wood, glass, photography, and digital imaging. It also sponsor exhibits and events.
Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center Stecoah (Robbinsville) - Stecoah Valley Arts Center is located in the restored 1926 school building. The Center offers, to its over 12,000 visitors annually, a summer concert series, two annual festivals and a regional artist gallery featuring the original art work and fine crafts of over 120 artists.
Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities (Southern Pines) - Housed on 21 acres, Weymouth Center is a renowned, full-fledged cultural center. Its extensive events calendar fea-tures the Chamber Music Series, Ragan Writers Series, and an Arts and Humanities Lecture Series. It also has writers-in-residence programs, writing competitions, and beautiful gardens to enjoy.
